Latest News on the Veterans Nursing Home located in Ivins

In March we will see construction begin on the Veterans Nursing Home according to the general contractor Layton Construction. It is forecast to be completed by May of 2013. The preliminary plans reflect our concern for the visual environment surrounding the future facility. The architects have designed the building to be low slung with elevations, features, and colors that harmonize with Vista School.

In a state owned veterans’ home, the VA will pay for nearly one half the cost of care for the resident. In certain instances the amount paid is 100% of the cost of care. This is only available to the veteran if he or she is residing in a state owned facility. They will be constructed utilizing the same basic model as the Ogden nursing home, incorporating the VA’s Culture Change concept in both. One significant change in these two facilities is that each room will be private and each room will have its’ own bathroom.

A consortium comprised of Layton Construction, BWA Architects and Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects is designing and building the new nursing homes. McFall said each would employ a full-time staff of between 140 and 150 people earning $4 million in salaries with $4.5 million spent each year on goods and services in their local economies.

Veterans Eagle Monument

Ed Hlavka’s “Eagle Monument” will become the centerpiece of the soon to be built Washington County Veterans Nursing Home in Ivins City.  This magnificent bronze sculpture towering over twenty-five feet in height will be nestled against the iconic red mountain that stands guard over the nursing home site.  With its sixteen-foot wingspan this inspiring symbol of America's freedom for which the future residents of this facility have fought will serve as a permanent reminder of the sacrifices they have made and their importance to each of us as beneficiaries.

Thank you for helping to make it a reality.  MAYOR HART - Ivins City, Utah

Building Our Local Economy

One of the most important long term objectives we have as a City is to develop our local economy.  The goal is to not only attract appropriate new businesses to Ivins but to help those that are here to flourish.  We’re fortunate to have the Veterans Nursing Home coming into our midst that will provide numerous employment opportunities for our residents both in the short and long term.  It was a focused effort that brought it here and there are other targeted campaigns underway.

As a destination City with limited outside traffic we will likely never enjoy large scale conventional commercial development.  But we do have a number of appealing qualities that brought our existing businesses to us and that will be attractive to others in the future.  Our natural beauty, serene environment, health, fitness & arts focus, and proximity to Snow Canyon State Park as well as other recreational opportunities top the list.
