My utility bill is much higher than it should be. I couldn’t have used that much water. What happened?
Often an expected spike in usage appears starting in March as outside watering is increased. Also those that have a pool or hot tub often experience an increase in usage in this same time period.
You may have a leak and it may or may not be visible. The first thing to do is perform a leak detection test. Make sure that all the water is off in your home i.e. the dishwasher or clothes washer or a toilet is not running, no one is taking a shower, etc. Open up the water meter box in the corner of your property near the roadside. Down inside there are numbers and an orange colored “star” shape. This should not be rotating if all the water is off. A spinning dial indicates a leak somewhere on your property. Often sprinkler systems leak in places that are not obvious and are a likely cause of problems.
I think I have a water leak, what do I do?
If the leak is between the meter and the street, the City is responsible for repairs. Please call the Public Works department at 634-0689.
However, a leak in this area (between the street and the meter) would not register on your meter. If your meter is ‘spinning’ during a leak detection test the leak is on your side (between the meter and the house). Leaks in this area are the responsibility of the home owner to locate and make necessary repairs.
